Plus: Humanoid Hand Design Clash, BMW's New Humanoid Robots

Good Morning, Roboticists!

Cockroaches now carry neural interfaces into NATO drills.

Programmable Cockroaches

TL;DR: German startup SWARM Biotactics has field-tested and deployed programmable cyborg cockroach swarms robot for paying NATO customers, including German forces, in Europe and the U.S. Equipped with neural interfaces, sensors, edge AI, and encrypted communications, the bio-hybrid insects conduct reconnaissance in confined spaces. Backed by €13 million in funding, the company says its systems scale through breeding rather than factory production.

Humanoid Hand Design Clash

TL;DR: A public dispute broke out after Origami Robotics co-founder Quanting Xie argued that high-ratio gearboxes are stalling humanoid hand dexterity and durability, promoting its low-ratio axial-flux motor alternative. 1X CEO Bernt Børnich responded by unveiling updated specs for NEO’s 22-DOF tendon-driven hand, citing an 8:1 ratio and 3.5 million-cycle lifespan. The clash centers on transparency, reliability, and which hardware can endure real-world manipulation.

BMW's New Humanoid Robots

TL;DR: BMW will begin a summer pilot at its Leipzig plant deploying two AI-powered humanoid robots called AEON, developed by Sweden’s Hexagon. Standing 1.65 meters tall and equipped with 22 sensors, the robots can scan vehicles, move parts, and swap their own batteries. BMW said employees will work alongside them and no job cuts are currently planned.

Agibot Updates G2 Humanoid

TL;DR: Agibot has unveiled an updated version of its G2 industrial humanoid robot, claiming submillimeter precision, dual-arm force control down to 0.5 newtons, and 24/7 operation with hot-swappable batteries. Built with automotive-grade components and powered by NVIDIA’s Jetson Thor, the wheeled robot is designed for assembly, logistics, inspection, and guided tours, with the company highlighting extensive durability and extreme-condition testing.

Schaeffler Sets Up Robotics Arm in China

TL;DR: German industrial giant Schaeffler established Schaeffler Embodied Intelligent Robotics (Taicang) Co., Ltd. in Suzhou’s Taicang High-Tech Zone, China, creating a dedicated subsidiary focused on humanoid robotics. The new unit will manufacture core components such as planetary gear actuators and sensors, build AI training and digital twin facilities, and deploy humanoid robots in its own factories to accelerate large-scale industrial adoption.

Hyundai Brings MobED to AW

TL;DR: Hyundai Motor Group’s Robotics Lab will showcase its MobED mobile robot at Smart Factory & Automation World (AW) 2026 in Seoul from March 4–6. First unveiled in December 2025 and awarded at CES 2026, the four-wheel “Mobile Eccentric Droid” is designed for agile indoor and outdoor industrial use.

German Robot Truck Unveiled

TL;DR: Quantum Systems introduced its MANDRILL unmanned ground robot truck at Enforce Tac 2026 in Nuremberg, showcasing a fast, electric battlefield robot truck built for rescue and logistics. Powered by dual 150-kW motors, the 2,623-pound robot reaches 62 mph, carries over 1,653 pounds, runs up to 124 miles, and operates in GPS-denied, harsh environments as part of a modular unmanned network.
