🤖 Humanoid Robots Could Hit 3B

Plus: China’s Lunar Worker Robot, Humanoid Robots Tested in War

Good Morning, Roboticists!

Startups promise “gainfully employed robots” while analysts forecast billions of humanoids walking the planet.

Humanoid Robots Could Hit 3B

TL;DR: A report from Bank of America Institute projects the global humanoid robot population could reach three billion units by 2060, eventually exceeding cars per capita. Early adoption will center on industrial and service work, but household assistants are expected to dominate long term, while falling hardware costs and advances in AI accelerate production and deployment.

China’s Lunar Worker Robot

TL;DR: Researchers from the Beijing Institute of Spacecraft System Engineering proposed a wheeled, dexterous robot designed to support the planned International Lunar Research Station near the Moon’s south pole by 2035. The concept combines fast wheeled mobility with articulated hands to handle construction, equipment maintenance, experiments, and lunar sample analysis on the surface.

Humanoid Robots Tested in War

TL;DR: Robotics startup Foundation said it sent two Phantom Mk-I humanoid robots to Ukraine earlier this year for frontline reconnaissance trials. Co-founder Mike LeBlanc told Time the goal is to deploy robots in combat roles instead of soldiers, with prototypes already capable of handling firearms.

Robot Breaks 4×4 Cube Record

TL;DR: Brothers Matthew Pidden and Thomas Pidden built a robot that solved a 4×4 puzzle cube in 45.3 seconds, earning recognition from Guinness World Records and ending a record that had stood for more than a decade for a robot. The system scans the cube, computes the solution, and uses four robotic arms to execute the moves automatically.

Bicycle Robot Gains Extreme Agility

TL;DR: Researchers at the Robotics and AI Institute developed the Ultra Mobility Vehicle (UMV), a bicycle-style robot that balances on two wheels while moving at high speed and avoiding obstacles. Using sensors, AI control algorithms, and dynamic balance, the system can turn sharply and even jump over barriers, offering potential uses in search-and-rescue, inspection, and disaster response.

Kalanick Launches Robot Company

TL;DR: Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick unveiled Atoms, a rebranded version of City Storage Systems, positioning it as a robotics company building “gainfully employed robots.” Based in Los Angeles, the venture targets food production, mining, and transport with specialized machines, aiming to industrialize physical work through automation after operating largely in stealth for nearly eight years.

Beijing Tests Robot Half Marathon

TL;DR: Organizers in Beijing just completed the first trial run for the 2026 Yizhuang humanoid robot half marathon, scheduled for April 19. More than 20 teams from companies and universities tested their robots on an upgraded course with ramps and uneven terrain. Unlike last year’s manually guided machines, some teams will compete using fully autonomous navigation.

AGIBOT Expands Into Singapore

TL;DR: AGIBOT announced its first overseas telecom-level partnership with Singtel Enterprise to expand robotics deployment in Singapore. The deal introduces a Robot-as-a-Service model starting in 2026, while AGIBOT also partnered with Certis Group to deploy service robots at Singapore’s Changi Airport Terminal 5.
