🤖 Space Spider Copycat

Good Morning, Roboticists!
Robots are no longer imitating human labor. They are rewriting where labor can exist at all.
China Copys Space Spider

TL;DR: Chinese researchers at Shenyang Institute of Automation are copying NASA’s abandoned SpiderFab idea with an orbital construction robot that could build large antennas or solar arrays directly in space. Using carbon-fiber composites, 3D-printed joints, and laser bonding, the team has tested a scaled-down antenna on Earth, though microgravity assembly and durability remain unsolved. Read more →
Unitree G1 Hits Ice

TL;DR: Unitree Robotics released a new demo showing its G1 humanoid robot skating on roller skates and ice skates while maintaining balance through coordinated wheel-leg control. The robot performs 360-degree turns, one-leg spins, and front flips. Read more →
Drone Surgical Robot

TL;DR: SS Innovations unveiled several in-development surgical robotics systems at its New Delhi conference, led by the SSi Vimana Aero Drone System. The concept uses a heavy-lift autonomous drone to deliver a compact robotic surgery unit near wounded soldiers, where remote surgeons could treat hemorrhaging, repair wounds, extract shrapnel, and stabilize patients before evacuation. Robot Sprays Running Shoes

TL;DR: Swiss running brand On debuted its LightSpray shoe-making robot in central London ahead of the marathon. Inspired by a hot glue gun spiderweb video, the robot moves a shoe sole around a continuous filament stream, spraying a one-piece upper into place in about four minutes while producing lighter, laceless shoes with lower manufacturing emissions. Robot Skin Feels Touch

TL;DR: Researchers at the University of Turku in Finland developed a flexible electronic skin that is stretchable, breathable, conductive, and transparent. The team attached the material to a robotic hand, where pressure sensors successfully detected touch and produced tactile feedback, showing early potential for prosthetics, soft robotics, and human-machine interfaces. Melody Greets Bitcoin 2026

TL;DR: Realbotix will showcase Melody, its M-Series humanoid robot, at the Bitcoin 2026 Conference in Las Vegas from April 27 to 29. Built as a physical AI interface, Melody has 39 upper-body degrees of freedom, customizable faces and body panels, and will greet attendees, answer questions, and help them find booths. Read more →
Industrial Cobots Get Stronger
TL;DR: ABB Robotics launched its PoWa cobot family, a new line of high-speed collaborative robots built for heavier industrial tasks in compact spaces. The six models cover 7–30 kg payloads, reach speeds up to 5.8 m/s, and target machine tending, palletizing, screwdriving, and arc welding, while promising no-code setup within an hour. Read more →
Robot Army Hype

TL;DR: Foundation Future Industries has won $24 million in Pentagon research contracts to test Phantom MK-1 humanoid robots for military support and breaching scenarios. Two units were sent to Ukraine for logistics and reconnaissance trials, while Eric Trump’s advisory role, CEO Sankaet Pathak’s fintech past, and ambitious production targets have drawn heavy scrutiny.
